SMILEY HOBBY SHOP ☺
Smiley Hobby Shop is…
a small side-business run by Haley, where she hand-customizes t-shirts for clients. I was tasked with designing a website that could easily be run by Haley to organize available items and customization options, and enables customers to select and customize t-shirts for shipping.
Easy to use, easy to maintain
Haley needed a site that is easy to use and maintain, and allows users to browse available products and customize items. Her specifications also included an about page, contact form, and a cart function that allows users to check out.
Visual design—
Ideation
When I began working on Smiley Hobby Shop’s visual design, I was inspired by the use of graphic minimalism that influences many aspects of Japanese, Korean, and Chinese contemporary design. These influences can be observed in streetwear trends and often pair structural choices like neutral tones and blocky shapes with illustrative designs and bright, saturated accents.
Style and branding
Using the visual library I had compiled in my mood board, I began the task of creating branding for Smiley Hobby Shop. I wanted to stick with the playful, smooth look, and was inspired by the cute, bright characters I’d noted during the visual research phase.
I came up with two finished iterations that could allow flexibility in Smiley Hobby Shop’s branding— one is more playful and features cute, brand-friendly characters, while the other is more uniform and minimal.
I worked on these logos and the style guide simultaneously, building the shop’s visual design from the inspiration compiled in the mood board.
